A statement has been released by the Nigeria Police Force regarding reports of xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa.
The situation has escalated due to fears of retaliation targeting South African nationals, companies, and interests in Nigeria.
Security and intelligence agencies conducted a comprehensive evaluation to understand the security implications and identify appropriate response strategies following the Joint Intelligence Board meeting on 18 May 2026, which was presided over by the National Security Adviser, according to a statement signed by DCP Anthony Okon Placid.
There is no reason for Nigerians to be worried, according to the Nigeria Police Force. The statement stated that the Federal Government is actively working with those in power and interested parties through diplomatic, intelligence, and security channels in order to find a peaceful solution and protect Nigerian interests abroad and at home.
Concern for the protection of Nigerians in South Africa is understandable, he continued, but the people should not resort to violence. No amount of threats to public safety or national security, including acts of violence, hate speech, property destruction, intimidation, or reprisal, will be permitted under any circumstances.
The rule of law is respected in Nigeria. No matter their nationality, everyone who is lawfully staying in the country has the right to legal protection. Consequently, the law of Nigeria shall be enforced in accordance with its provisions in the event that any attempt is made to harm South African citizens, diplomatic missions, companies, or other legitimate interests in Nigeria.
Especially on social media, the public should refrain from sharing unsubstantiated, inflammatory, or inciting content, according to the Force. The dissemination of misleading or offensive content has the potential to escalate tensions, destabilise public order, and impede diplomatic efforts to resolve the issue.
The Nigerian Police Force has said that it has activated security protocols and increased surveillance around vital national assets in collaboration with other intelligence and security agencies.
