Providing infrastructure for the judiciary is not an interference with the functions of the third arm of government, President Bola Tinubu declared on Monday.
According to Tinubu, his government is supplying the necessary facilities so that the judiciary can do its job properly.
At the Abuja commissioning of the Body of Benchers’ annexe office, Tinubu made a speech on behalf of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, George Akume.
This is one of the projects planned to commemorate Tinubu’s third year as president.
The official commissioning of the state-of-the-art office annexe of the Body of Benchers in our nation’s capital is something I stand before you today to do with profound honour and a strong feeling of national purpose’, he said.
“Today’s ceremony is more than just a tribute to a stunningly beautiful building—it’s a powerful statement of our administration’s support for the rule of law, the autonomy of our institution, and the honour of Nigeria’s legal community.
We assured the Nigerian people that their hopes would be revived when we took the oath of office, and we made it plain that a robust democracy needs a stable institution to support it.
At the very top of this system is the body of Benchers, which acts as a guardian to the legal profession by admitting only those who are qualified to practise law and by enforcing strict disciplinary rules.
A building befitting an organization of this stature, duty, and dignity should contain it; after all, it is of immense national importance.
It is neither an infringement on the autonomy of another branch of government nor an attack on the legal community’s and the judiciary’s ability to do their jobs well; rather, it is a shared and constitutional obligation to provide a setting that encourages honesty and integrity in the administration of justice.
“Consistent with that, we will not halt this magnificent annexe in our efforts to support the legal ego-system.”
Additionally, the president declared that the Nigerian Law School in Abuja’s Bwari Area will be receiving 300 rooms in hotels.
The FCT Administration has authorised and begun building two hostels with a 300-capacity for the Nigerian Law School in Bwari, with the goal of bettering the lives of our aspiring solicitors.
He also mentioned that a new fire station specifically for protecting the institution in this region is currently under construction, and that the important roadways connecting the Body of Benchers secretariat to Nile University have been finished.
