In order to defuse a potentially violent situation, the Cross River State Police Command suspended a religious service at the Chapel of Redemption on Sunday at the University of Calabar, UNICAL.
The disturbance happened because the chapel’s pastor, Rev. Joseph Ushie, was in the middle of leading a service when a university caretaker committee and an interim chaplain designated by the Vice-Chancellor tried to take over.
Worshippers were confused and tensions within the congregation were heightened as a result of the development.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Godwin Etim informed the media that the service had been suspended in order to prevent a collapse of law and order.
According to Etim, “let the service to continue could have resulted in violence” due to the apparent tension at the location.
He said he had conversations with the interim chaplain, Ushie, and a trustee from the church. For the sake of harmony, all sides have decided to temporarily halt service.
In addition, he reminded everyone to keep their cool and said on Monday the relevant parties will be meeting with the police leadership.
Professor Offiong Offiong, VC of the University of Calabar, and anyone representing him were previously ordered by the Federal High Court in Port Harcourt not to meddle in the business or operations of the Chapel of Redemption; this incident occurs despite that order.
Chief Mba Ukweni, SAN, Ushie’s attorney, had already sued the university registrar, Dr. Chukwuka Icha, and the vice chancellor.
While performing his duties and exercising his freedom to worship at the chapel, Ushie allegedly faced intimidation, threats, and interference; he sought protection from these in his application.
Justice Phoebe Ayua agreed to the injunction after hearing the case and ordered the defendants and their representatives to stay out of the chapel’s business. Until the substantive matter’s hearing on August 20, 2026, the court further ordered the parties to keep things as they are.
The police have stated their desire for a peaceful resolution to the conflict thru conversation and compliance with the court’s order.
