No one should ever put their own interests ahead of those of Nigerians, according to the Obong of Calabar, His Eminence, Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu V. This includes all political leaders, but notably elected officials.
Tuesday, while hosting a group of APC state committee members at his Calabar palace for a formal visit, the Obong made the appeal.
Peace and growth, he said, can only flourish in an atmosphere of open communication, shared responsibility, and mutual respect.
Otu praised the group for honouring the traditional institution, stressing that the palace is still a representation of the Efik Kingdom’s and Cross River State’s shared history and culture.
The Obong emphasised that traditional institutions will remain guardians of peace, justice, and society values, and he further urged political players to act peacefully and in a way that promotes unity among the people.
He thanked the party leaders for their visit and assured them that the palace would continue to back their initiatives to improve Cross River State.
Christopher S. Eta, the party’s state chairman, had previously stated that the delegation’s purpose in visiting the palace was to honour the sacred monarch and strengthen ties between the party and the long-standing institution.
He made the point that traditional rulers still have an important role in society, especially when it comes to building stronger communities and promoting social harmony.
He further said that the party leaders were able to interact with the palace during the trip, which helped them understand the significance of historic institutions in modern politics, administration, and campaigning.
