U.S. forces are in Nigeria on an invitation from AFRICOM, the United States Africa Command.
As AFRICOM pointed out, the agreement between the two countries makes their presence feasible, and it is predicated on respect for Nigeria’s independence and shared interests.
This was said by AFRICOM Director of Public Affairs Col. Rebecca Heyse during Tuesday’s X Space meeting.
She clarified that the United States and Nigeria collaborate amicably, without resorting to coercion. The relationship between the US and Nigeria is entirely voluntary, Heyse stressed.
“Respect for Nigerian sovereignty is the foundation of our operations and cooperation with Nigeria. She made it clear that the US-Nigeria Joint Working Group was the sole structure under which they would engage.
As long as the two nations continue to benefit from the alliance, Heyse said, the United States will continue to back it.
