Governor Umo Eno has conveyed his sympathies to the victims of Thursday’s flooding catastrophe in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, as they continue to assess the damage.
Rainfall, he said, is a natural part of life. However, he did advise locals against making matters worse by putting trash into drainage channels.
Addressing journalists at Victor Attah International Airport, the governor took the opportunity to recognise the government’s role in responding to the tragedy. He assured them that the appropriate agencies will persist in desilting significant drainage routes and becoming involved when needed.
He begged the people to constantly bring the attention of the administration to places that require significant desilting.
It has just begun to rain. Rain is a natural phenomenon, and the government has no control over it. We need everyone’s help to keep our culverts and drainage channels clear so they don’t get clogged. He spoke.
A joint effort by the government and the people is needed to tackle the crisis, the Governor said, recalling that the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet, had earlier issued a warning of heavy rains and potential floods.
He urged everyone to do their part to help the government’s efforts by clearing the areas around their houses and businesses of any debris that could clog the drainage systems and make it difficult for storm water to flow freely.
