Medical doctors in Ogun State’s public health sector will now be able to use the Professional Allowance Table (PAT) and Specialist Allowance, a decision that has been warmly received by the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA).
During a press conference in Abeokuta prior to the association’s 2026 Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference, Dr. Luqman Ogunjimi, Chairman of the Ogun State chapter of the NMA, announced the news.
Ogunjimi asserts that the clearance by Governor Dapo Abiodun displays the administration’s dedication to enhancing healthcare delivery statewide and the well-being of medical practitioners.
Payment for the Specialist Allowance began in July 2026, he said, and the Professional Allowance Table is now being put into place in accordance with the Federal Government’s approved pay structure for doctors.
Approval, according to the NMA, is a major step toward improved healthcare for residents, higher work satisfaction for doctors, and more motivation for them to execute their jobs well.
Ogunjimi thanked Governor Abiodun for listening to the concerns of doctors and nurses and responding in a way that was sympathetic to workers.
He went on to say that the group is eager to work with the state on future welfare issues and health-related policy initiatives. There is a critical scarcity of medical professionals in Ogun State, which the NMA chairman also brought out.
The doctor-to-patient ratio is around one for every 7,500 residents, he revealed, as only approximately 1,200 doctors are presently attending to an estimated nine million individuals.
He went on to say that the current workforce is under tremendous strain, and that many of the state’s doctors have refused to leave despite better chances elsewhere.
He stressed the need of authorities keeping healthcare workers’ well-being as a top priority in order to improve healthcare service and retain qualified personnel.
