If approved, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has promised that the new police structure will have professionalism, accountability, and operational excellence at its core, and it has also stated that it is prepared to assist the establishment of state police.
The promise was made by IGP Kayode Egbetokun during the opening remarks of a one-day sensitisation workshop on state police hosted by the Nigeria Institute of Police Studies (NIPS).
He stated that the goal of the session was to provide police officers the tools they need to properly adjust to future policing changes and to actively participate in conversations about state police.
The IGP emphasised the importance of attendees making the most of the training and sharing what they learned with officers in their commands and formations so that everyone in the Force is on the same page regarding the proposed change.
The Inspector-General had earlier received praise for his role in forming the Nigeria Police Force Steering Committee on State Police from Professor Olu Ogunshakin, Director-General of the Nigeria Institute of Police Studies.
He called it a major step forward in Nigeria’s policing reform program and pointed out that the proposed State Police Bill incorporates many of the committee’s suggestions.
The Nigeria Police Force is holding the sensitisation session as part of a larger initiative to prepare its officers for future changes, improve operational efficiency, and maintain public trust in the police.
