Said to have been kidnapped earlier this week, seven students from Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade, in Remo North Local Government Area, were rescued on Thursday, marking a significant victory for the Ogun State Government in its battle against abduction.
Addressing journalists at the Governor’s Office, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, alongside security chiefs and a few of the rescued students, Governor Dapo Abiodun reiterated his administration’s steadfast determination to root out kidnappers and other criminal elements from Ogun State.
The Governor announced that the rescue was a result of a well-coordinated security operation that included the following entities: the Nigerian Police Force, the Armed Forces, the DSS, the NSCDC, the Amotekun Corps, local vigilantes, hunters, and the Ogun State Security Network Agency.
It is with great pleasure that I announce the good people of Ogun State that all seven victims were rescued alive in the early hours of today, Thursday, August 6, 2026, by the combined security operation.
The event resulted in one person being shot and sent to the hospital right away. Since then, the student’s condition has stabilised.
We want the people of Ogun State to know that our security forces are still looking for anyone involved with this criminal activity; this operation is still underway, he assured them.
According to Governor Abiodun, the operation got a major boost when Mr. Olatunji Disu, the Inspector-General of Police, gave the go-ahead to use a police helicopter for overhead surveillance. This was a pivotal decision that led to the students’ safe recovery.
“Our determination is crystal clear. The governor made it clear that Ogun State will continue to be a place where law-abiding citizens, residents, and investors may feel comfortable.
Additionally, he mentioned that the security forces have stepped up their efforts to capture any remaining fugitives from the criminal group.
Intelligence sharing, inter-agency teamwork, and persistent operational pressure against criminal elements have shown to be beneficial in recent joint security projects, especially Operation Kò S’Áyé, according to him.
Noting that the recent rescue of 308 abducted victims by Nigerian security forces underscores the growing effectiveness of coordinated security operations nationwide, Governor Abiodun commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his administration’s commitment to combating banditry, terrorism, and kidnapping across the country. “I must now give credit where credit is due: to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his administration. They have made restoring peace and security a top priority in Nigeria’s development agenda, and they have done it by consistently investing in the security agencies’ and the military’s operational capacity.
