In an effort to reduce national instability, the president has announced that the formation of a state police force is imminent.
This was revealed by Femi Gbajabiamila, the chief of staff to the president, at a Thursday briefing with reporters from the State House in Abuja following a high-level consultative meeting that the presidency had called.
According to Gbajabiamila, the federal government has made significant progress in creating state police, and a constitutional modification is expected in the near future.
Three or four months ago, he claims, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu issued an executive order to begin discussions on the structure of the state police.

According to the Chief of Staff, talks have progressed to the point where the required constitutional amendments are being fine-tuned, and then an enabling statute will be passed.
“At the moment, our focus is on the constitutional amendment itself. In due course, we will address the enabling law,” Gbajabiamila continued.
