Osogbo is the capital of Osun State, and the newly completed LAMECO flyover has taken a hit from the heavy rains that fell just three weeks after it opened to traffic.
Following an overnight downpour that lasted for about eight hours on Thursday and Friday, a noticeable dip appeared on one piece of the carriageway of the 672 metre flyover, which was commissioned by Governor Ademola Adeleke on July 1, 2026.
Before traffic officials limited access, drivers and motorcyclists were warned to slow down on the damaged section of the bridge due to sinking asphalt and obvious fissures.
Many locals and commuters are worried about the bridge’s situation and have called on the state administration to fix it quickly so that people can cross it safely and avoid any additional damage.
Due to the damaged part, the regular flow of traffic within the Osogbo metropolis was disturbed, forcing many vehicles to seek alternative routes.
After the incident, members of the Osun Amotekun Corps surrounded the damaged portion of the flyover, blocking traffic and pedestrians from reaching the bridge as authorities checked the damage.
A little over a month ago, the state government formally inaugurated the flyover as part of their infrastructure development program, so naturally, the incident has caught the public’s attention.
In response, the Osun Accord claimed that the destruction was not due to structural failure but rather to intentional sabotage.
Claiming to have received “credible reports of a disturbing pattern of vandalisation targeting public infrastructure delivered by the administration of Governor Ademola Adeleke,” the party issued a statement through its chairman, Victor Akande.
“These actions go beyond what is expected of a typical criminal conduct. Instead, they seem to be orchestrated by desperate elements within the opposition APC, with the goal of discrediting the current administration’s outstanding accomplishments in preparation for the upcoming governorship race.
“These elements seem determined to destroy the very projects that are transforming communities across the state in order to create a false impression of government failure,” the statement continued, adding that they have failed to match the Governor’s excellent record of achievement.
