Voters in the 2027 general election in Kogi State should prioritise candidates with legislative experience, according to Yahaya Bello, a former governor of the state.
Leke Abejide, a congressman from Kogi’s Yagba Federal Constituency and the head of the House Committee on Customs, recently hosted an event where Bello made this information public.
According to Bello, lawmakers who have served numerous years in office tend to be more knowledgeable about legislative procedures, networks, and institutional knowledge, which gives them more power and makes them more effective.
Such training, he said, can improve one’s capacity to head committees, build constituencies, and weigh in on policy matters.
He claims that the National Assembly’s organisational structure gives seniority and experience a premium, which helps long-serving lawmakers better manage complicated procedures and keep initiatives continuing.

Yes, the time is now, but timing is everything. Permit Abejide to serve out his third term and improve the constituency even more. According to him, the opportunity will follow him, and it will be stronger.
In addition, he strongly suggested that Abejide, who was elected to the 10th National Assembly as an African Democratic Congress member, consider running for reelection as an APC candidate.
“We are hoping that he will become a member of the APC and run for reelection to the House of Representatives.”
